What is the Sports Premium?
The Government is providing funding of £150 million per annum for academic years 2013/14 and 2014/15 to provide new, substantial primary school sport funding’. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.
The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.
Purpose of Funding
Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
Possible uses for the funding include:
- Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
- New or additional Change4Life sport clubs
- Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
- Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
- Running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
- Buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/sport
Providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs and holiday clubs
Impact of spending
The school continues to perform well at inter school competitions and a large number of children have access to these. Last academic year we participated in netball, cross country, multi skills, cricket, hockey, swimming and basketball. The school has just been awarded Gold School Sports mark for our school provision for the third year. Children are fit, active and healthy and enjoy the opportunities which they get.
- All teachers are confident in delivering high quality PE at KS 1 & KS2 and develop enhanced sports specific skills in all PE areas across the school.
- Every child will leave Sessay CE Primary School ‘a swimmer’ (minimum 25m)
- Children have access to high quality extracurricular clubs – netball, football and multi-skills. The clubs provided by the school will be aimed at different age ranges and cover different aspects of sport to increase participation e.g. KS1 dance
- Children in Foundation and KS1 access their Outdoor area all year round therefore participating in regular exercise daily.
- All pupils will become generally more active during break times through formal and informal games facilitated by trained staff.
- Increased participation in cluster competitions
How are we going to make this funding sustainable for the future?
The use of external sports coaches in school to provide staff with professional development has improved the quality of PE lessons delivered in school. Training, new resources and equipment purchased has resulted in a wider variety of sport being available to pupils.
By using professionally trained coaches to work with Junior Leaders we are empowering them to take charge to plan and lead playtime and lunchtime activities.
Our pupils enjoy taking part, and doing well in, an increasing number of inter school competitions including cricket, swimming, netball, football and cross country running.

Primary PE & Sport Premium Statement
To ensure that the improvements we made last year are sustained and PE and sport continues to improve we have continued our involvement with the local cluster of primary schools and continue to employ a specialist sports coach. Our aims for the coming year are:
- Continue to introduce the children to a wider variety of sporting and adventure activities
- Encourage the children to self-monitor using the trackers purchased extending their personal best.
- To support the children who do not like physical activity to be more active and improve their attitude to PE lessons.
- To build teacher’s confidence, knowledge and skill particularly in teaching in dance and gym
- To build resilience in all children.
- Ensure swimming targets are met. We have received £16,835 sports premium funding this year. This is being used to employ a specialist PE coach for CPD, to enable all to participate in competitive cluster events and for additional equipment.
